Tour de Tugaloo - This Saturday, November 1st

On Yonah Dam Road in Stephens County on Saturday, the Tour de Tugaloo will be a tour de force.

For the sixth year, almost 150 bicyclists will come together to raise money for the Tugaloo Corridor Project. Cyclist Herbert Cooper from Stephens County will be the grand marshal for the event and will start the ride. Organizer Duane Mahon said participants will ride in both Georgia and South Carolina.

“The ride starts at Yonah Dam Park (in Stephens County) and it rides along Yonah Dam Road, and it rides up into some back roads, crosses over into the Currahee Club, and then up from there, it rides over into South Carolina,” Mahon said.

Riders will be able to choose from among three different course lengths, with the longest being 62 miles. In addition to the regular ride, Mahon said, there will be a family fun ride that is 5 miles long and good for younger riders. Whichever length participants decide to pedal along, the course promises to be quite scenic.

“The roads all along Yonah Dam Road and River Road in South Carolina are all very flat and very scenic,” Mahon said. “They do go along the river, which used to be a lake, but now it is just the Tugaloo River. But it is very beautiful.”

The money raised goes to the Tugaloo Corridor Project, which focuses on the preservation of the river corridor from Yonah Dam to the Currahee Club. Mahon said the ride has gained in popularity over the years, so much so that a year-round cycling club has been formed.

Anyone who is interested in the Tour de Tugaloo or the bicycling club can call Mahon at (706) 886-8614. Anyone who would like to participate in the Tour de Tugaloo or just cheer on the cyclists should be at Yonah Dam Park at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
